The University of Northumbria at Newcastle (UNN) is a research-rich, business-focused, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. Based in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, it has over 27,000 students from over 100 countries enrolled at undergraduate and post-graduate level including over 500 PhD students. The University is international in its operations and reach, with programmes delivered in Newcastle upon Tyne, London and worldwide. UNN has a strong profile in Asia, with regional offices in China, India, Malaysia and Thailand. UNN works with major employers, including Nike, IBM, Nissan, the BBC, and the NHS, while more than 560 employers and 60 professional bodies sponsor or accredit the University’s programmes.

UNN is dedicated to supporting the career development of all researchers, evidenced by the European Commission HR Excellence in Research status held since 2013. UNN also has substantial experience as partner or coordinator in international research projects, including over 30 projects from the European Commission programmes FP5 to Horizon 2020, as well as a further 30 projects from other EC funding sources (Erasmus, Tempus, ERDF and Interreg). The total value of these projects is approximately £25M. The University currently coordinates or participates in 20 Horizon 2020/FP7 projects, including 10 Marie Sklodowska Curie actions (individual fellowships, RISE/IRSES, ITNs), and 10 other collaborative research projects of various types.
